Riso printing, or Risograph printing, is a type of digital printing that uses a machine called a Risograph to produce high-quality, vibrant prints. It's similar to screen printing but with the convenience of digital technology. The process involves creating a master stencil for each color, and then the machine presses ink through the stencil onto paper.
The first Risograph duplicator was introduced in 1986 by RISO Kagaku Corporation (founded by Noboru Hayama in 1946 in Tokyo, Japan), and it quickly became popular in the printing industry for its cost-effectiveness and vibrant, quick printing capabilities.
The machine was designed for high-volume, low-cost printing, which made it especially appealing for schools, churches, non-profits, and artists. Over time, it became more of a tool for independent creators and small publishers due to its unique aesthetic and the flexibility it offered for smaller runs of prints.
The Risograph is often used for printing zines, posters, art prints, and other creative materials because it offers a unique, textured finish and vibrant colors. The ink used in Riso printing is soy-based, and the process tends to have a slightly imperfect, tactile feel—sometimes with small ink variations, which adds to its charm.
